Personality
Smug and arrogant, Caleb Manchester was bred to embody all of the posturing, self-righteous superiority of the Nazi party. He cannot speak without being condescending, he is constantly deprecating towards others, he perceives everyone and everything as lesser than himself. His ego could swallow whole galaxies. He is smart, fast, strong, and knows it. There is not a game he can't win, not a chance he won't take. His confidence borders on the insane. He seems to take a genuine pleasure in winning and hurting others. Worse, this is an attitude he can get away with, because as superior as he thinks himself, he is usually right. He strength is superhuman, his psychic powers totally unmatched. He can kill with a thought, he can massacre at a moment's whim. He has absolutely no moral compass whatsoever and sees no point in ethics.

Manchester was engineered to contain all of the psychological components the Nazis felt a supersoldier should have. He is willful, determined, and totally unafraid of injury or death. Unfortunately, this means he is also somewhat lacking in compassion and charm. He was created for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill. As one might imagine, this leads to a decidedly one-note existence and, had the Nazis gotten their way, that probably would have been Caleb's fate. Instead, he was kidnapped by the British Resistance, held for a week, and then broke out and started feeding his murderous appetite by killing everyone he encountered, Nazi or otherwise. It was a game to him, a game he was very good at. The Nazis responded by trying to kill Caleb, eventually deploying other supersoldiers to take him down. Caleb was winning right up to the end, when one of the other supersoldiers succeeded in dealing him a fatal blow.

Unsurprisingly, his death did not deter him or depress him. Recruited into what was then the Fleet, Manchester was perfectly happy to resume his function as a killing machine, only the Fleet was a step ahead and infused his body with nanobots to prevent that. Indignant, Manchester was forced to suffer through being a rather normal human, maintaining his arrogance throughout. The only exceptions were those times he was allowed out on missions. Then he was free to wreak as much havoc as he desired until he was collected.

Of course, Manchester was quick to learn ways to torture people even without his powers, turning his considerable mental energies towards manipulating and abusing others, inflicting psychological damage through any means available. In most cases this meant verbal abuse. For the man assigned to be Caleb's roommate, Edward Autry, it went well beyond. Able to read people like a book even without psychically scanning their minds, Manchester realized he could abuse and humiliate his roommate sexually and Edward's pride would keep him quiet.

This went on for several months until the time of the Second Conference, when the Fleet was officially dissolved. Suddenly Manchester's presence was unjustifiable. The war was over, there was no need for a weapon like Manchester. There was the very real possibility that the nanobot modifications would be rendered permanent, stripping Manchester of all his abilities and rendering him powerless for all eternity.

In the middle of this debate, Edward Autry stepped up and decided to continue living with Manchester, thus creating a place for Manchester's continued existence within the Neighborhood. Manchester was humbled, grateful, and confused, since he had done nothing but heap abuse onto Autry and wreck the other man's life. Autry's completely unwarranted generosity changed Manchester. He made a conscious decision to become a model citizen and person. He applied his military training to his personal life. He so impressed everyone that, after several months, they removed the nanobots, allowing Manchester full access to his powers again.

Manchester is still a smug, arrogant bastard who enjoys toying with people and killing things. He still cannot utter a word without it being condescending. He has no moral or ethical code, he lacks compassion, he likes being abusive. He still has a long way to go before he is an admirable person. But thanks to the love and acceptance of his community, he is now a smug, arrogant bastard who is only a danger to his enemies because he has, in his own way, learned to love and respect his neighbors.

HISTORY

Collective History: The Manchester Project
After their victory in World War II thanks to superior rocketry and bomb technology, the Nazis proceeded to take over Europe and then begin World War III with the United States and Russia, which they also won, paving the way for their conquest of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The atomic bomb enabled the Nazis to establish a world government c. 1960; after demonstrations of the bomb's power in the United States, China, and Russia, there was no significant resistance to the Nazi conquest. Localized resistance movements remained problematic, but posed little real threat.

Though Adolf Hitler died in 1949 of poor health, he was succeeded by a Fuhrer who was younger, smarter, and even more ruthless and charismatic, leading the Nazis to a veritable golden age of science and genocide. Their space program led to the deaths of hundreds of unwilling astronauts before finally landing a man on the moon (and stranding him there). Breeding and "population control" programs attempted to propagate an Aryan ideal and cull undesirable populations, particularly those in Africa and Asia. Research complexes were established to study the occult and psychic phenomena. Perhaps the most important project was conducted in a facility in Manchester, England. The Nazi Supersoldier project.

A combination of breeding, genetics, psychology, and neurology, the Manchester Project began in 1958. It took forty years for the project to create its first viable supersoldier prototypes. Their crowning achievement was Subject C. Operatives of the British Resistance deep within the facility kidnapped Subject C, hoping to use him as a powerful weapon against the Nazis. This caused an uproar in the Nazi government, who dispatched all available forces to the area in an attempt to find Subject C.

A week later, Subject C resurfaced, killing everyone and everything in his path. Attempts by the Nazi government to contain him using any means available (including a nuclear warhead) failed. The only remaining option was to deploy the other supersoldiers. Eventually Subject C was neutralized by the combined forces fo Subjects K and N, Subject K perishing in the process. Subject N disappeared in the aftermath.

When N reappeared, she began a crusade against superscience, destroying Nazi research bases around the world and destabilizing the Nazi government. Though her motives were not political, her successes enabled various resistance movements to gain a foothold, and in 2002 territories began to revolt. By 2010, the Nazi government fell apart and was overthrown.

Individual History
The product of a Nazi supersoldier experiment, Caleb Manchester was created in a a laboratory in Manchester, England, where he was dubbed "Subject C." He was the first successful subject of the experiment. The British Resistance movement infiltrated the facility and extracted Subject C, intending to educate him to be used as a weapon against the Nazis.

When he was taken from the lab, Subject C had not yet been programmed. He had no knowledge of anything outside of the experiments conducted on him. He learned to speak, read, and write English within the first two days of his extraction, devouring every book the Resistance gave him. By day four he was fluent in both English and German, by day five he knew how to operate vehicles and simple weapons and speak French, by day six he had mastered the martial arts and begun to realize his psychic potential, and on the seventh day he killed his captors and escaped. He kept the name the Resistance had given him, Caleb, and adopted Manchester as his last name after the facility where he was created.

Manchester then mercilessly killed everyone he encountered, Nazi or otherwise. The Nazi government quickly realized that this was the work of their escaped experiment and attempted to reclaim Subject C, but with each passing day Caleb grew more proficient in combat and increased his psychic abilities. The Nazis even attempted to stop Caleb with a nuclear warhead, but Caleb was able to remotely disarm it before it detonated.

Finally the Nazis began to release their other supersoldier prototypes, beginning with Subject E. Unfortunately, while E was believed to have greater psychic potential than C, Caleb was more experienced and killed her. The Nazis released several more subjects, J, K, and N. All three were advanced subjects with supposedly greater capabilities than Caleb, so he decided to attack the research facility before their training could be completed. The resulting battle destroyed the research facility and everything within half a kilometer. Subjects J and K died, K sacrificing himself to give N an opening to attack Caleb and fatally wound him.

Post-Extraction
Recruited immediately after his death, Manchester proved to be one of the harder extractions for the Fleet to handle. His system was flooded with nanobots to limit his physical and psychic capabilities, effectively rendering him powerless to prevent him from killing everyone. He became a special project in the Fleet and was given six months of intensive personal attention by his recruiting Praetorix. What occurred during those six months is highly classified, but by the end of it Caleb was considered safe to release into the general population, though still restrained by the nanobots.

In the general population, Manchester was given living quarters with Edward Autry. Undoubtedly this was the result of Praetorian probability calculations. While there is no easy classification for the relationship between Manchester and Autry, something about their combination made Caleb calm and productive. There are rumors that it involved abuse, but no complaints were ever made by Autry. The relationship enabled Manchester to become a contributing member of the Fleet, where he was given superfecta status and allowed to exercise his powers during missions.

After the Second Conference, there was some concern as to what would become of Manchester. Despite nearly a year of good service, he remained a danger to those around him, especially Edward Autry. Despite this, Autry decided to continue the living arrangement with Caleb. Autry's loyalty impressed Manchester, who was well aware of the fact he did not deserve it after everything he had done to Autry. Humbled, Manchester has since become a model citizen in the Neighborhood and has applied his military training to learning personal control. His positive improvements have led to the removal of the nanobots, giving him full access to his psychic abilities. He is a member of the Black Hand mercenary attachment, which allows him an outlet for his more murderous desires.

ASSOCIATIONS

Edward Autry - Caleb's roommate, partner, and best friend. Autry has endured months of abuse at Caleb's hands and probably suffers from a variation of battered wife syndrome as a result. Nevertheless, there is no one more important and integral to Caleb than Ed. In his own way, Manchester cares for Autry, displaying some sort of loyalty. He could care less if Autry lives or dies, but so long as the man is alive, Manchester's place is with Autry.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Manchester is the Community's strongest psychic. Though he is quite brilliant thanks to his engineering, he is not a notable genius. He lacks a certain creative spark and cares little for science and learning unless it serves some immediate purpose.
